Revival comes from heaven when heroic souls enter the conflict determined to win or die or, if need be, to win and die! The kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.  -Charles G. Finney

Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord. Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known. Habakkuk 3:2

As I mentioned previously, my pastor Che Ahn had a dream in 1984 of a black man saying “Come to Los Angeles, there’s going to be a great revival!” We moved to California with great expectancy. There my wife gave me the book Azusa Street by Frank Bartleman. Bartleman was one of the great intercessors who gave himself to a year of fasting and prayer and saw the great Azusa Street Revival flame leap from Los Angeles to the world.

So, I read that  book and it lit me on fire. Moses had a burning bush but I had a burning book. I went into eighteen days of fasting and at the end of that time I cried, “God, give me the mantle of Bartleman. I don’t want to read about revival, I want to see it!” The next morning my friend came to me, not knowing of my prayer, and he said, “Lou, I had a dream last night. In the dream I saw a big black book. The title was “Revival”. I turned to the inside of the cover and saw a picture of a guy’s face. His name was Frank Bartleman and his face turned to your face. In the dream I closed the book and said ‘I’ve got to get this book to Lou."”

Now, 34 years later, I’m asking myself the great question of whether I can surrender to this kind of prayer? From San Diego to Redding, Tahoe to San Francisco, from Sacramento to Coachella - can these cities be swept up in such a spirit of prayer? My own brother-in-law can hardly stop weeping these days, pouring himself out for California. Could we be in the days of Bartleman’s 1905 travail for a new generation?

Bartleman wrote: “One night I awoke from my sleep shouting the praises of God. He was getting hold of me more and more. I was now going day and night, exhorting to faith in God for mighty things. The spirit of revival consumed me. The spirit of prophecy came upon me strongly, also. I seemed to receive a definite “gift of faith” for revival. We were evidently in the beginning of wonderful days to come, and I prophesied continually of a mighty outpouring.” (p.10)

Lord, you are the author and finisher of our faith. You’ve captured our hearts with a vision for revival. Now, O Lord, bring us into the finishing work of your dunamis power! Fan the fires of your intercession in me... in California… until the whole coast is swept up in its burning. As your servant Bartleman saw and proclaimed the mighty outpouring of his day, may our speech be consumed with the reality of heaven’s coming. Jesus, we love your glory! Send your Spirit!
