Tongues of fire resting on the disciples

In the days of Christ's resurrection and ascension, a small group of believers gathered to for the baptism of the Holy Spirit that Jesus promised to send to the Church. These new believers needed the power of the Holy Spirit to carry out the mandate of the great commission.

As the people gathered together praying that Jesus would send the Holy Spirit, the sound of wind filled the room and tongues of fire rested on everyone. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and their speech revealed His presence by their ability to speak in tongues they had not learned.

At that time, thousands of devout Jews were visiting Jerusalem and when they heard the sound they came to the place where His Spirit was being poured out. Peter, who once denied his association with Jesus in fear, now preached the gospel with boldness and the people repented and believed the testimony he gave concerning their Messiah. These men became the first believers that carried the renewed covenant of faith in Jesus Christ.

“And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, 'which,' He said, 'you have heard from Me....'” —Acts 1:4
